Blumen Vegetable Seeds has developed an ambitious and innovative radicchio genetic improvement program that aims to merge the knowledge acquired in T&T, which joined Blumen Group in 2012, through more than 40 years of seed selection and production with the most modern technologies of genetic analysis.
The result was the obtaining of the first true Italian hybrid of radicchio obtained through genetic male sterility, found in nature within the local Venetian ideotypes, confirming the company “mission” of using only traditional techniques. Thanks to a consolidated collaboration with the University of Padua, it was possible to sequence the radicchio genome and thus better understand the functioning of male-sterility and its use to obtain hybrid seed.
Starting from this knowledge and developing a meticulous work of recovery, selection and improvement of the native germplasm, containing the organoleptic characteristics typical of local varieties, a wide range of radicchio, hybrids and selections was born, while maintaining the organoleptic characteristics such as flavor, color, vein, texture and crunchiness.
The high productivity in the field and the quality of each head, together with the excellent adaptability of the Blumen Vegetable Seeds selections to hostile variables and the products shelf life, guarantee production programs with continuous harvesting, essential to sustain an adequate economic return for the entire supply chain.
Today our products differ from the rest of the market both for the deep connection with the territory and for the following characteristics:
